The Comic

Peace and Profit was a comic I wrote and illustrated a few years ago. It's borderline surrealist, blending sci-fi and politics.

Its origins lie partly in boredom - I was working a job a few years back that had a lot of spare time involved in it, that's where the initial concept sketches for it came from. The title comes from what little I know about the situation in Nicaragua - that more people die there in a single year of peace time than died during the entire Nicaraguan civil war. The reason for this is simple enough; during the civil war, when the Sandanistas ruled the country, anyone who needed an operation got one. Since the end of the war, and since the World Bank has had their way in the country, if you can't pay for an operation you can't get an operation. Thus more people are killed through peace than were killed through war. It also made me think of the old saying 'An unjust peace is better than a just war.' No, apparently not.
